The Big Idea
“Judge not, that you be not judged”
Matthew 7:1
A critical spirit is a spiritual disease that infects the one who harbors it far more than those being criticized. When we assume the role of judge, we position ourselves above others and cut ourselves off from grace. Chambersushers us toward mercy, recognizing that we too are flawed and in constant need of forgiveness.
The Simple Takeaway
Maintains mental files of others’ failures and shortcomings. They judge their motives, critique their choices, and feel spiritually superior. This critical stance slowly hardens their heart and isolates them.
Recognizes their own need for grace so keenly that judgment of others becomes impossible. They extend mercy freely, knowing they constantly receive it themselves. This humility opens their heart and draws others closer.
Chambers teaches that a humble heart has no room for a critical spirit.
